Botanical Earth

It’s been top secret for a while now, and I was asked not to say a word - but I can now…..Home of the Sampler is having a very special series of Samplers with exclusive items full size items from hand picked indie crafters.  Botanical Earth was asked to join for the very first one!  I was completely thrilled to have Alison consider us for this project.  She chose our Calendula Herb Unscented Soap. 

The Sampler Select is available starting today and here’s the link to see all the other indie artists in the box.  I LOVE Little Flower Designs who is in the box with us.  She makes the prettiest things and for the Sampler Select, designed exclusive wall tiles.

I didn’t have time to design an exclusive soap for Sampler Select, but am launching our new formulation of our Calendula Herb soap.  It has a larger amount of olive oil (which makes it an even higher percent of Castile style) and no more palm, or palm kernel oil.  The change is for environmental and animal rights issues, which I’ll expand later this week.

Botanical Earth has been a member for over 3 years now, and I usually go to the National Green Pages to source vendors or services we need first - that’s how I found Marion from ClearVision Copywriting who wrote a lot of our press releases!

Do you need to give some gifts or perk up the ol’ home decor?  Check out the whimiscal, witty and crafty items in the Wonderland Retreat store on Etsy.  One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sales goes to help Elijah Wyman’s family with medical bills.  The true indie community really does help one another out in times of need….I like to think of it as a really big co-op of friends I have never met….anyway, more about the store.  There’s all sorts of goodies from some amazing indie designers. But hurry, the Wyman’s Benefit ends on Sept. 15th.  Prices range from $6 - $65 so there’s quite a variety of unique indie gifts.

Now that she’s up and going well again, I decided to leave our Lavender Gift Basket and Thank You gift on the Wonderland Retreat Store to help Elijah’s cause.

There’s lots of different goods in the shop all donated by other indie designers too.  I personally love the Vintage Obi Wallet by Kimono Momo and you’ll find paintings, necklaces, cards and much more.  Remember though, a lot of the handmade goods are one-of-a-kind pieces so if you like it, you better not wait.

I just finished up Botanical Earth’s donations for the 50th Anniversary Gala for the Friends of Animals Party - 400 of those little cards with a lip balm and one of our vegan bunny magnets.   

 For the FoA’s silent auction, I donated a Lavender Manila Hemp gift basket and a cheetah hand beaded Kenyan baskets filled with patchouli and jasmine soaps.

I recevied the best phone call today from Debby Rooney, who is the founder of Beads For Education.  She is over in Kenya finishing up with the 2007 Break the Chains of Illiteracy 100 mile Walkathon.  I planned to leave myself this year to go, but family and work took over…..I’m scheduled to go over to Kenya next year.  BEADS is one of the non-profit organizations that I support - actually a percentage of all of Botanical Earth’s sales goes towards charity works.  You might have seen the hand beaded baskets that are made by the women of the Dupoto Womens Group that Botanical Earth offers.  The baskets are beautiful and new colors for spring should be arriving shortly!  If you go to the BEADS site, they offer all sorts of hand beaded items for sale.

For this trip over, we sent over some 50 pounds of our soap for the girls and mothers to enjoy.  Ms. Rooney sent me the picture of the ladies in their beautiful native dresses and then some of the girls.  Later in the month, I will post my letter from Farja, who is the young girl (age 9) that Botanical Earth helps sponsors through school.  It’s a long term commitment, but one that I don’t ever question. 

I have to thank our customer, Alice Eberhard for getting us involved.  She has done the walk for the last 2 years - go Alice!  When she mentioned she worked with BEADS would take any donations of soap, I was more than willing to help.  As a child I grew up in the Middle East and on holiday we would go to Kenya.  It is the only place that I would cry when I had to leave - I love the Amboseli area in particular.  So to know that I could do something as a business too regarding helping girls in Kenya was an honor.  I had friends from Kenya in grade school and college, but all but one has died from the civil unrest throughout the years. 

So for now, Botanical Earth sponsors Farja through school close to her home, and will assist her through college if she chooses.  Hopefully, as the business grows, we can sponsor more girls, and the girls in turn will educate their own people on environmental issues, humanitarian rights and AIDS education. If you want to read more on all the happenings at BEADs and to see some great pictures, including Alice’s - go to http://www.BeadsForEducation.org

Love to shop, love indie designers and live in the Overland Park, Kansas area?  Well, check out Haute Market’s September 28th Fashion Roundup on Thursday night.  We sent in 80 of our Mint and Hemp Lip Balms for the event, so if you sign up early, you might just end up with one of our sample packs in your Swag bag of goodies.
